Handling Custom Stair Work with Confidence

Customer Staircom

Founded in 1998, Designer Staircases supplies timber and metal staircases to builders across New South Wales. The business works with both volume home builders and custom residential projects, manufacturing between 15 and 30 staircases per week depending on complexity. With a team of around 30 staff, the focus is on consistent build quality, reliable delivery and clear communication throughout each project.

Responding to changing design expectations

Stair design requirements have changed steadily over time. Even cost-sensitive projects now require more considered detailing, while higher-end homes increasingly incorporate premium hardwoods, metal and glass. As a result, staircases are often more visible and technically involved than they were in the past.

To support this shift, Designer Staircases has continued to refine its design and manufacturing processes to suit a broader range of stair types.

From design through to manufacture

CNC machining plays a central role in production, with Biesse equipment selected for its strong local support and established presence within the Australian timber industry. To better manage complex and custom stair designs, Staircon was integrated into the workflow in 2022.

Staircon connects to the CNC machines via BSolid, helping ensure that design intent is accurately carried through to manufacture.

“Staircon gives us the flexibility we need when we’re working through more complex or custom stair designs. It helps us resolve the details properly before anything goes into production,” says Frank Carbone at Designer Staircases.

Improving clarity during quoting and approval

One of the key benefits of Staircon has been improved clarity during the quoting and approval stages. Detailed drawings allow clients to clearly understand the design before manufacturing begins, helping reduce uncertainty and rework later in the process.

“Clear, accurate drawings make a big difference. They help align everyone early and give our clients confidence in what’s being delivered,” states Frank.

Staircon is primarily used for curved and more detailed staircases, while simpler stair designs are still handled using StairBIZ.

Looking ahead

Designer Staircases continues to focus on delivering well-made custom staircases with competitive pricing and dependable lead times. Improving efficiency while maintaining quality remains a key priority as project complexity increases.

For Staircon, this collaboration reflects how flexible stair design software can support Australian manufacturers in managing custom stair work with confidence—without overcomplicating everyday production.
